Vassar 69, Bard 52

NEW PALTZ, NY — NEW PALTZ, NY (November 22, 2005) -- Sophomore forward Tyson Brazell scored a career-high 17 points and both sophomore forward Lawrence Avitabile and junior center William Kieffer posted double-doubles, as Vassar's men's basketball team defeated Bard College, 69-52, in the opening round of the Mid-Hudson Shootout at SUNY New Paltz Tuesday night.

The Brewers (3-0), who are the defending champions of the Shootout, will play the winner of the SUNY New Paltz-Mt. St. Mary's game next Tuesday, November 30 at New Paltz. Prior to that game, Vassar plays Connecticut College on the road this Sunday, November 27 at 3:00 pm.
Beside's Brazell's (Salt Lake City, UT/Waterford School) 17-point, 5 rebound performance, which also included a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, Vassar got 16 points and 11 rebounds from Avitabile (Southington, CT/Southington), the Liberty League Performer of the Week. Kieffer (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greely) added 13 points, 13 rebounds and a team-high six assists for his second consecutive game with a double-double. He had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Elms College in the championship game of the VC Invitational.

Vassar held a 39-29 lead at intermission and outscored Bard 30-23 ini the second half. The Brewers held a decided edge in rebounding with a 59-24 margin. Junior forward Evan Hannay (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) had a career-high 8 boards on the night. Vassar helped kept Bard at bay with a 16-for-19 (84.2 percent) outing from the free throw line.

Bard had two players score in double figures, Josef Waldense with 14 points and Colin Oroutt also had 14 points. Waldense added a team-high 8 rebounds.
