Coast Guard 85, New York City Tech 70

BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn, NY -- Sophomore Guard Grant Johnson (Parkview/Grayson, GA) scored 24 points and fellow soph Jeff Prebeck (Columbus East-NAPS / Columbus, IN) had 21 points to lead the United States Coast Guard Academy over New York City College of Technology in non-league men's basketball, 85-70 this evening at City Tech's Klitgord Center.
Both teams, playing in their third game of the season were coming off of a loss on Saturday following a season-opening win on Friday night. It was the home opener for the Yellow Jackets, who were led by senior Clyde Forteau (St. Raymond's / Bronx, NY) with 16 points and four assists. Senior forward Danul Cabbagestalk (John Adams / Brooklyn, NY) added 14 points (10 in the second half) and seven rebounds, while junior guard Kareem Hanley (Canarsie / Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (1-2).
Leading 22-21 with 6:40 to go in the first half, Coast Guard (2-1) went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:04 and never looked back, taking a 42-32 score into the break. In the second half, the Bears were never led the lead get below nine points, despite 15 second-stanza turnovers created by the City Tech press. CGA dominated on the boards, 49-32, led by Prebeck (12) and sophomore Craig Johnson (South Medford / Medford, OR) with 11 caroms and 12 points for a double-double. Another soph, Al Sowers (St. John's at Prospect Hall / Monrovia, MD) added 15 points and five assists for the victors.
Junior forward Otis Saylee (Seward Park / New York, NY) was held to six points, but led the Yellow Jackets, who return to action next Monday with a home game against Union College, with nine rebounds.
