Randolph-Macon (2-0), coached by former all-America guard and 2005 LVC Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Mike Rhoades ’95, ended Lebanon Valley’s string of four straight Marquette titles, becoming the first team other than the Dutchmen to win it since New Jersey City in the 1999-2000 tournament. The Yellow Jackets also earned their first-ever win over Lebanon Valley after the Dutchmen won the first three meetings.
Lebanon Valley (1-1) had its 14-game home winning streak snapped, losing in the LVC Gymnasium for the first time since its 82-75 setback to Elizabethtown College on Feb. 14, 2004.
The Dutchmen were paced by junior guard Jimmy Curran, who scored 18 points and shot 4-for-7 from three-point range, and senior forward Dan Hogan, who notched eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Both Curran and Hogan were named to the all-tournament team.
Junior forward Dave Kasyan added 14 points for the Valley.
Randolph-Macon shot 56.4% from the field, including 53.8% (7-for-13) from behind the arc.
It was a nick-and-tuck affair in the early going, with three ties and seven lead changes in the first half. Lebanon Valley led 22-19 with 7:41 remaining in the opening stanza following a Kasyan lay-up before the Yellow Jackets ran off seven straight points, capped by a Wansley three-pointer, to take a 26-22 lead with 5:15 on the clock. But the Dutchmen answered with a 6-1 surge, and a Kasyan fastbreak lay-up put LVC back on top (28-27) with 1:47 to go.
Randolph-Macon scored the final five points of the half, and a Phil Hawley lay-up with 1:24 left gave the Jackets the lead (29-28) for good. RMC led 32-28 at the break.
The Dutchmen pulled to within one (38-37) with 16:42 remaining after a three-pointer from junior guard Hunter Bretschneider, but an 11-3 Yellow Jacket run pushed Randolph Macon’s lead to nine (49-40) with 12:18 to go.
Randolph-Macon saw it lead reach double digits (54-42) with 9:41 left following a three-pointer from junior guard Stephen Sutherland. But LVC stayed within striking distance and pulled to within six (63-57) with 58 seconds left when Kasyan nailed his second three-pointer of the game. However, that would turn out to be the Dutchmen’s final points, as LVC missed its final two shots and committed a pair of turnovers the rest of the way. The Yellow Jackets knocked down five of their last six free throws inside the final minute.
Krovic finished with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting (3-for-4 from three-point range) while Hawley scored 10 points.
Freshman guard Dan Hodge added nine points for the Dutchmen in 11 minutes off the bench while sophomore forward Peter Ruth and freshman guard Kyle Enoch handed out a game-high four assists apiece.
Wansley had 15 points and six rebounds in the team’s first-round win over Averett and finished the tournament with 37 points and 15 rebounds.
Averett defeated Arcadia 78-54 in the consolation game.
