Salisbury 83, Goucher 70

STEVENSON, Md. — STEVENSON, Md. - Ray Williams (Hanover, MD / Fort Meade) and Segun Odumeru (Riverdal, MD / Parkdale) each scored 27 points for Salisbury University (1-2) to lead the Sea Gull men’s basketball team to an 83-70 victory over Goucher College (0-3) in the Pride of Maryland Tournament, hosted by Villa Julie College, Sunday afternoon.

The victory secured seventh place for Salisbury in the eight team field. Salisbury spent most of the game playing catch-up, tying the score twice in the second half before finally taking a lead it would not surrender with 7:58 left in the contest. A Williams trey gave Salisbury the edge. He finished the game 4-for-7 from behind the arc. The Sea Gulls went on a 15-4 run over the next five minutes to hold the Gophers at bay.

Goucher got 25 points out of James Russo (Cockeysville, MD / Dulaney), and an additional 21 points from Jonathan Garritt (Severna Park , MD / Severna Park ). Garritt was named to the All-Tournament team as was Salisbury’s Williams, who hit 10-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 from behind the three-point arc. He was also the leading rebounder in the game with 11.

After shooting 37.5% (12-of-32) in the first half, the Sea Gulls caught fire in the second half, hitting 17-of-32 (53.1%) in the final 20 minutes as SU outscored the Gophers, 53-38.

Salisbury won the rebounding battle, 43-33, and won the contest despite the Gophers hitting 50% (16-of-32) from the field in the second half.

The Sea Gulls will return to action Tuesday when SU travels to Chestertown, Md. to face Washington College at 7:30 p.m.
