Eastern Mennonite 87, Southern Virginia 84

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Junior Jason Sager scored 26 points to lead Eastern Mennonite University to a season-opening 87-84 win over Southern Virginia University in men’s basketball action on Saturday night in Buena Vista, Va.

EMU (1-0) put four players in double figures, led by Sager with 26 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Senior E.J. Arrington, returning from missing most of last season with an injury, scored 13 points, including his 1,000th career point, and also had seven boards, two assists, and five steals. Sophomore Brad Parkes had 14 points and four assists while sophomore Korey Whiting had 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and five steals.

Southern Virginia (2-5) was led by Tanner Johnson’s 22 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Louder had 21 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Ty Proctor added 12 points for the Knights.

SVU led by 13 points at the half and by as many as 15 before EMU started its comeback. The Royals did not take the lead until 4:31 remained in the game, but EMU outscored SVU 55-39 in the second half to record the three-point victory. The Royals withstood three three-point field goal attempts in the final 20 seconds by the Knights.

EMU will continue its season on Tuesday by hosting Shenandoah University at 7 p.m.
