Muskingum 56, Shenandoah 55

WINCHESTER, Va. - — Shenandoah University suffered through a cold shooting afternoon Saturday as Muskingum captured the Apple Tip-Off Tournament championship with a 56-55 victory over the host Hornets.


Shenandoah (1-1) had two chances to hit the game-winning shot in the final 10 seconds, but sophomore http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=489"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Jeremiah Lawrence couldn't convert on his running lay-up and senior http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=63"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Jared Hale missed a 10-footer in the lane.


Muskingum got what proved to be the game-winning bucket when Cole Pittis broke a 53-53 tie with a three-pointer at the 1:29 mark. SU answered with a pair of http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=493"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Stevie Johns free throws 11 seconds later to cut the deficit to just one, but turned it over after drawing a charge with a 60 seconds left.


SU shot 20 for 55 (36.4 percent) for the game and just 8 for 28 (28.6 percent) in the first half. The Muskies contrasted this performance by making four of its first six three-point attempts - this allowed MC to jump out to a 17-9 led by the 14:19 mark.


Muskingum held this lead the entire way until the hosts capped off a 18-7 run from the 12:59 to 2:56 marks with an http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=415"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Onyie Onunaku layup. Onunaku was fouled on the play, but before he took take his free throw, http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=837"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Moutkar Faweninmi was whistled for a technical foul and the Muskies re-took the lead.


Coach Rob Harris' club was able to tie the game on two more occasions, but were never able to regain the advantage.


Johns had a game-high 23 points to grab a spot on the All-Tournament team along with Lawrence. Zach Ross and Brandon Todd represented Muskingum, with Todd earning MVP honors.
