Methodist 59, SUNY-Maritime 48

SEWANEE, Tenn. – — The 2005-06 men’s basketball season got off on a winning note for the Methodist Monarchs as they pulled off a 59-48 victory over Maritime State in the Lon Varnell Classic at Sewanee. This marks the fourth straight season that Methodist has opened the season with a victory, and it was also the 95th victory for Methodist head coach David Smith.

It was inauspicious beginning for the Monarchs as they fell behind early 7-0. However, Methodist battled back to tie the game 26-26 at halftime, and then took control in the second half. Working the ball inside and shooting 50 percent from the field, the Monarchs built as much as a 17-point lead in the second half.

Junior guard Robert Lee paced Methodist with 17 points on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range, while Eugene Grant scored 11 points and Seth Thomas scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior forwards Dragon Radmanovic and Brandon Williams each added seven points for Methodist.

Jay Gilbert scored 18 points for Maritime State (0-2), while Robert Benton scored 14 points.

Methodist plays host Sewanee on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Lon Varnell Classic.
