CRESSON, Pa. — A night after shooting over 60 percent, Waynesburg struggled to shot 40 percent in its 104-90 loss to Mt. Aloysius in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament host by the Mounties. Nero, a 6-1 forward, made 9-of-19 attempts from the field, including three three-pointers, while grabbing four rebounds (3 offense, 1 defense) in 22 minutes.
Wilson continued his high-scoring start, sinking 50 percent (7 of 14) of his shots and all four of his free throws. The three-year starter finished the tournament with 56 points on 16-of-26 attempts, while also making 17 of 19 free-throw attempts.
While Waynesburg struggled to find its shooting touch, Mt. Aloysius shot a solid .519 from the floor and were led offensively by Roman Mims and Justin Ohler, who combined for 55 points. Mims scored a game-high 31, while Ohler posted a double-double with 24 points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
The Yellow Jacket bench outscored the Mountie reserves 29-23, including 15 from junior transfer Jeff Linden. Linden, a guard, lettered last season while playing at Albright College in Reading, Pa.
Linden made three straight baskets for Waynesburg in the middle of the second half, giving the Yellow Jackets a 71-64 lead. However, the Mounties engineered a 20-4 run over the next minutes to take command of the game.
The Yellow Jackets scored a combined 185 points in their first two contests, their highest two-game output to start a season since the 1998-1999 season when they scored 187, including a single-game school-record 128 in the opener.
Waynesburg continues its early-season action with a contest at Frostburg State (Md.) on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets own a 45-25 advantage over the Bobcats in the all-time series, while FSU has won the last two meetings, including an 85-80 victory last season in Waynesburg.
