York (Pa.) 68, Dickinson 46

CARLISLE, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team won their fourth consecutive in-season tournament as the Spartans clamped down on Dickinson College and rode home with a 68-46 victory in the championship game of the Pizza Hut Tip Off Tournament in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans improve to 2-0 with the win while the homestanding Red Devils fall to 1-1.
The game was not exactly an offensive showcase in the early going. The first point of the game didn’t come until the 16:30 mark when senior Kenny Fass split a pair of free throws to put the Spartans up 1-0. York pushed the lead to 7-0 before Dickinson’s Cory Kenny hit a jumper to put the Red Devils on the board. Kenny’s bucket came 7:08 into the game as the Red Devils started the game 0-for-11 from the field.
The Spartans pushed their early lead to 15-6 on a Chad McGowan lay up with 9:35 remaining in the half. Dickinson trimmed the Spartan lead to five at 17-12 with 6:22 left but that would be as close as the Red Devils would get. The Spartans used an 8-2 run over 2:35 late in the first half as they pushed the lead to 28-15, capped by junior Joe Yeck’s three-pointer. The Spartans settled for a 30-18 lead at the intermission.
The Red Devils cut into the Spartans’ halftime lead as they opened the half on an extended 10-2 run to open the half. The Dickinson run left the Spartan lead at 34-28 with 15:56 left in regulation. The Spartans responded with a game-changing 5:15 run that saw York outscore the hosts 19-0 to increase the lead to 53-28 with 9:41 remaining. Yeck again capped the run with his third triple of the day. The Spartan defense harassed the Red Devils into an 0-for-10 stretch during the run while Dickinson also had four turnovers during the five minute Spartan spurt.
Dickinson would not get any closer than 21 points the rest of the way as the green and white cruised to the tournament championship.
McGowan was selected the tournament MVP as he had game highs in points with 16 and rebounds with 13. McGowan’s 13 rebounds establish a new career high as he played outstanding defense with two blocked shots and a number of altered Dickinson field goal attempts. Yeck, an All-Tournament team selection, added 11 points as he made three more three-point field goals while he also nailed a pair of free throws. Yeck also handed out three assists for the Spartans. Junior captain Brad Zerfing added 11 points, five rebounds, and an assist while Fass finished the game with nine points and four rebounds. Freshman Quinn Howard came off the bench to register career highs in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Howard had eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals as he notched 20 minutes of playing time in his second collegiate game.
The Red Devils received nine points each from Kazmahr Grell and Mark Harrison. Four Red Devils tied for the team lead with four rebounds each.
The Spartans played well but could have really blown the game open if they had cut down on their 27 turnovers. York pounded the Red Devils on the glass as they outrebounded the hosts 52-37.
York finished the game shooting 44.9% from the floor while the Red Devils converted just 21.4% of their attempts from the field. Neither team was particularly good from charity stripe as York was 17-for-32 (53.1%) while Dickinson was 16-for-31 (51.6%).
The Spartans open their home campaign on Tuesday evening as they host Gettysburg College in a non-conference contest. Game time at Wolf Gym is set for 7:30 pm.
