POTSDAM, NY — BARTON SELECTED MVP AS POTSDAM DOWNS KNIGHTS 74-60
November 19, 2005

Tournament MVP Edane Barton produced 17 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists as Potsdam State won its third consecutive North Country “Coaches Vs. Cancer” Classic title with a 74-60 victory over the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium

Though there were only three lead changes in the first half, the game was tightly played through the opening 20 minutes. The game was tied on six different occasions with a maximum lead of six points held by the Bears at 29-23 with 4:18 remaining. The gap was closed to a basket with just two minutes left in the half, but the Bears brought the lead back to four when time expired, 35-31.

EJ Harrison (Troy, NY) and Russ Vitallo (Dracut, MA) led Clarkson with nine points in the first half for the Golden Knights, while Edane Barton scored nine points, including a 6-for-9 performance from the free throw line, to lead Potsdam State. Barton also added six rebounds and five assists.

The Bears came out with a 8-0 run to take a double-digit lead at 43-31 just 1:25 into the half. Clarkson came back quickly with a 6-0 run, but then dropped behind by 12 points, 51-39. A 13-3 run over a seven-minute span brought the Bears’ advantage to 18 points late in the half, a lead that the Knights could not overcome. Clarkson controlled the boards with a 49-32 lead in rebounds, but shot just 33.3 percent from the floor, scoring at only a 28.6 percent clip in the second half.

Ernst Ducena scored 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting and was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammate David Bisesi, who added 13 points and three assists. Harrison and Vitallo also were selected to the All-Tournament team for Clarkson. Harrison finished with 12 points while Vitallo had 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Ryan Smith (Wilson, NY) scored 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and grabbed seven boards, including five on the offensive end.
