Medwid scored a team-high 14 points in the win, while Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) and Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall/Oakland Catholic) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Gators came out firing, jumping out to a seven-point, 11-4 lead five minutes into the game. Allegheny kept their foot on the gas pedal, taking the advantage to 12 with four minutes to play. Thiel (0-2) kept fighting, scoring the next 11 points, cutting the deficit to one with 15 seconds to play before Medwid hit a layup with seven seconds left in the half, taking the Gators into the locker room with a three-point, 28-25 lead.
The Gators never trailed in the second half, increasing their lead to as many as nine in the half before the Tomcats fought back, tying the game on four occasions, including with 27 seconds left when freshman Amber Bodrik hit a pair of free throws, knotting the game at 60 apiece. Medwid’s first try at the game-winner went awry, but a Vasilisin rebound gave AC another chance, and Medwid made good on the second try, giving the Gators their first win of the 2005-06 season.
Amber Bodrick of Thiel scored a game-high 18 points, while Nicole Valentino and Heather Abate scored 13 and 11, respectively. Bodrick pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while Fontella Jones grabbed 10 boards, as Thiel out-rebounded the Gators 42-40. Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-LaSalle) grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Gators, while Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) and Murtagh dished out four assists apiece.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Tuesday, November 22 when the team plays host to the nationally ranked Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. at the David V. Wise Center.
