York (Pa.) 74, DeSales 60

CARLISLE, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team opened their 2005-06 campaign with a solid 74-60 victory over DeSales University on Friday evening in the semifinal round of the Dickinson College Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans are now 1-0 for the campaign while the Bulldogs now stand at 0-1.
The Bulldogs jumped on the Spartans early as they notched six of the first eight points of the game. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 9-5 but the green and white hit four treys to fashion a 12-3 spurt that turned the deficit into a 17-12 lead. After a Mike Zinn jumper cut the Spartan lead to 17-14, York scored six straight to push their advantage to 23-14. A Drew Christman triple trimmed the green and white lead to 25-19 but York responded with a 14-3 run to push the lead back to 17 at 39-22. That run was fueled by sophomore Chad McGowan as he had a jumper, a breakaway dunk, a three-pointer, a pair of free throws and a driving layup to account for 11 of the 14 points on the run. Senior Brandon Bushey capped the run with a triple. DeSales recovered to score five of the final seven points of the half as they trailed 41-26 at the intermission.
The Spartans shot 51.9% in the first half from the floor including 6-for-11 from three. DeSales converted 11-of-26 from the floor for an accuracy mark of 42.3%.
In the second half, the Bulldogs trimmed the Spartan lead to nine with 15:13 remaining but the green and white scored 11 of the next 14 points in the game to push the lead to 59-42 with 10:16 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs used five straight free throws to get the Spartan lead back down to 12 but that is as low as the York advantage would get in the second half. The Spartan lead would grow to the high water mark of 18 on a Brian Singer jumper with 4:51 left. The Spartans would settle for the 14 point win as DeSales scored seven of the final 11 points of the game.
The Spartans received 26 points from McGowan as he was 8-for-15 from the floor including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. McGowan made 11 trips to the charity stripe where he converted eight of those chances. McGowan also had five rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. Senior Kenny Fass was the other Spartan in double figures with 12 points while he also had five rebounds and two assists. Junior Joe Yeck only attempted three shots on the evening but he nailed all three of those shots and all three were three-point field goals as he ended the game with nine points. Yeck also had a team-high three assists in the game.
The Bulldogs placed three players in double figures led by Phil Stricker’s 15 points as he was 5-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-9 from the charity stripe. Stricker added four rebounds, two steals, and one blocked shot. Christman added 14 points, three rebounds, and two steals to the DeSales cause. Zinn was the third Bulldog in double figures with 11 points while he also had five rebounds. Eddie Ohlson handed out six assists while he also had three points and three rebounds.
The Spartans held a 22-7 edge in points off turnovers while they also had a 13-8 advantage in second chance points. The Spartan bench also did a nice job as they outscored the DeSales reserves 25-11.
York finished the game shooting 46.3% from the floor including a blistering 56.3% from beyond the arc. DeSales shot 41.7% from the field while they were 6-for-18 (33.3%) from three. York converted 68.2% from the free throw line while DeSales finished off 63.6% of their chances from the line.
The Spartans advance to face the host Red Devils in the tournament championship game on Saturday. The green and white will be looking to capture their fourth straight in-season tournament championship. Tip time is set for 3:30 pm in Carlisle.
