The Violets, who overcame a 10-point halftime deficit, advanced to Saturday night's 8pm championship game of the Rose City Classic, which is being held at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
Senior Jared Kildare led the way for the Violets, scoring 14 of his team-high 21 points in the second half. He also added four assists and three steals in the win.
Junior Jason Boone also had a huge second half, pouring in 14 of his 16 points and taking over the game in the closing minutes.
With 3:11 remaining and the Violets trailing 60-53, Boone converted a three-point play to close the gap. On the next possession, Boone threw down an emphatic alley-oop dunk from Kildare to bring the Violets to within two points.
After a Ursinus free throw made the score 61-58 with 1:10 left, Violet junior Michael DeCorso evened the score with a three-pointer from the corner. After a missed field goal by Ursinus, NYU ran the shot clock to one second before Boone put the Violets up 63-61 with a layup with 17 seconds left.
Ursinus had a chance to tie with eight seconds left , but Matt Fabian missed two free throws. NYU's Matt Basford made one of two from the line with two seconds left, making the score 64-61. Kildare, who played 39 minutes, then stole the inbounds pass, ending any chance for Ursinus to tie the game.
The Violets (1-0) trailed 35-25 at halftime before cutting the lead to two with 15 minutes to play. However, Ursinus took another 10-point lead just four minutes later before the Violets mounted their comeback.
NYU junior forward Daniel Falcon finished the game with 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Boone added eight rebounds and three blocks, while junior Chael Clark came off the bench to collect eight rebounds, as well.
Nick Shattuck (24 points) and Brian McEvily (19 points) led Ursinus (0-1) in scoring.
