McDaniel trailed by 13 points late in the first half. Instead of packing it in, the Green Terror switched to a pressure defense to spark a 9-0 run over the final 2:32 of the first half. The Bobcats led the Terror 38-34 going into the break.
The teams traded leads throughout the second half with neither side gaining more than a seven-point edge on its opponent. Trailing by a point with less than a minute to play, Arrington stole the ball from Frostburg’s Davon Collier and drew a foul. Arrington’s 19th point of the night drew the teams even, while his 20th point gave the Terror a 69-68 lead. McDaniel would not relinquish its edge the remainder of the way.
Freshman Ryan Finch sealed the game with a three-pointer with seven seconds left. Frostburg’s Keith Hazel attempted a trey at the buzzer, but his shot banked off of the left side of the rim.
McDaniel scored 30 points off of 43 Frostburg turnovers in the game. Chris Rutland and Josh McKay each finished in double figures in the scoring column with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Frostburg got 24 points and 9 boards from Daniel Ryley. Collier and Brian Owen each scored 15 points for the Bobcats, and Collier grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss.
With the win, McDaniel starts the season and Bob Flynn era at 1-0. Frostburg starts off at 0-1. McDaniel will return to action on Saturday evening in the Pride of Maryland Semifinals, which will be played on the campus of Villa Julie. McDaniel will face Johns Hopkins at 8:00pm in Stevenson, Md.
