Transylvania 77, Maryville (Mo.) 71

ST> LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men's basketball team suffered a 77-71 loss to Transylvania University in the first round of the 2005 Sodexho-Campus Classic. The Saints, who now stand at 0-1 on the season, were down by only two points with 1:10 remaining on the clock, but they could not pull out the victory down the stretch. Transylvania, who received 68 votes in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, improves to 1-0 overall with the win.
Maryville seniors Matt Regan and Stephen Bash sank each of their two free throw attempts in the final seconds of the game, but it was too little too late, as the Saints finished 15-of-25 (.600) from the charity stripe for the game. Transylvania on the other hand sank 20-of-24 (.833) freebies, including nine straight in the final 1:10 of the game to secure the victory.
Four starters recorded double digits in scoring for the Saints. Senior Ben Hebl tallied a team-high 14 points and finished 5-of-10 (.500) from the floor, while fellow seniors Bash, Regan and Ryan Klein scored 12, 13 and 13 points respectively. Klein and Bash also grabbed a team-high six rebounds a piece, and Klein added a game-high six assists, three steals and two blocks.
Transylvania was led by Bryan Howard with 20 points, while Joey Searle had eight points and eight rebounds. Matt Finke also added 11 points, while Marc Bain, Stephen Gabbard and Joey Verax added 10 points a piece.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow when they take on No. 9 Hanover College at 3:00 pm in round two of the 2005 Sodexho-Campus Classic. Transylvania will face Webster University at 1:00 pm.
