NAPERVILLE, Ill. The Loras College men's basketball team opened the 2005-06 season with a thrilling 73-71 upset win over 13th ranked UW-Whitewater in the opening round of the North Central Tip-Off Classic.
Scottie Braden hit a three-pointer with 8.5 seconds left and the Duhawks withstood several late chances to tie the game by UW-Whitewater. The Duhawks outscored the Warhawks 51-36 in the second half and overcame an 18-point deficit with just over 12 minutes to play.
Kyle White had 16 points to lead the Duhawks. He also nabbed six rebounds. Scottie Braden added 14 off the bench including four three-pointers and Greg King contibuted 13. Luke Slater made his debut by scoring 11 points.
Loras trailed by 13 at the half, 35-22 after shooting just 22 percent in the first period. For the game the Duhawks shot 39.7% from the floor. Loras was outrebounded by 11 (37-26) on the glass.
The Duhawks (1-0) advance to meet the winner of North Central and Robert-Morris Springfield in tomorrow's championship game at 8:00 p.m.
