John Carroll 137, Emory and Henry 127

Cincinnati, OH — Thanks to having a school in its own conference (Marietta College) that employs the "Grinnell" style of offense, the John Carroll Blue Streaks were prepared to face Emory & Henry College this afternoon in its 2005-2006 season opening game.

In the opening round of the Franklin Savings Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, John Carroll set a school record for points in a single game by rolling to a 137-127 victory over the Emory & Henry Wasps.

The 137 points eclipses the JCU record of 125, scored against Huntingdon College on November 28, 1997.

Although John Carroll trailed for a grand total of 17 seconds all night, the victory was hardly assured until the final seconds. On several occasions in the first half, the Blue Streaks were able to build double digit leads, only to have the Emory & Henry -- utilizing an up tempo style of play popularized by Grinnell College -- claw back into the game. JCU led 44-31 with 5:44 to play in the opening period, but a 22-8 run enabled the Wasps to take their first and only lead at 53-52 when Robert Hudson converted a lay-up with 1:01 to play.

The Blue Streaks were able to take a 56-54 lead into halftime on a Kyle Roggenburk lay-up with 26 seconds showing on the clock.

John Carroll, ranked #16 in the preseason D3hoops.com national poll, attempted many times to run away from the Wasps in the second half. On two occasions, the Blue Streaks built a 17-point lead, the last of which was on a Roggenburk lay-up with 7:24 left to play that made the score 106-89.

Emory & Henry refused to go quietly, and would whittle the lead down to single digits (122-113) on Lance Reasbeck's three-pointer with 1:33 remaining. The Wasps would continue to chip into the lead, reducing their deficit to four points at 131-127 when Hudson connected on a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play.

That would be the final points for the Wasps, however, as John Carroll closed out the game with the final six points.

The Blue Streaks, who did not attempt a single three-point field goal throughout the contest, shot 50-80 (.625) from the field, including 31-43 (.721) in the second half. JCU also set a single game school record for free throw attempts with 68, but did not do itself any favors from the charity stripe by only making 37 (.544 for the game).

JCU (1-0) was led by a career-high 26 points from pete moran, a career-high 21 points from Roggenburk, and the first career double-double by Derek Smith (19 points, 12 rebounds), who was making his collegiate debut this evening. The Blue Streaks, who had all 11 players score at least two points and eight in double figures, outreboudned the Wasps (68-48). All 11 players also had at least one assist and one turnover.

Emory & Henry (0-1) was led by Antonio Leary's 21 points. Shavar Bland came off the bench to score 19 points. The Wasps, who had six players foul out of the game, were 40-105 (.381) from the field, and 18-62 (.290) from three-point range.
