Richard Stockton 71, Elizabethtown 69

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Close games were the order of the day on the opener of the 2005 Elizabethtown College L.B. Smith Ford Blue Jay Classic tournament Friday night. In the opening game, Lincoln University (Pa.) edged King’s College (Pa.) 72-69, and in the nightcap, Richard Stockton College slipped past host Elizabethtown 71-69 in the 2005-06 season openers for all four teams. As a result, Elizabethtown will face King’s in the tournament’s consolation game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, while Lincoln will face Richard Stockton in the championship at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

In the night’s first game, Sami Wylie (Philadelphia, PA/Southern) paced Lincoln in scoring with 22 points, and Thomas Hickson (Baltimore, MD/Woodlawn) added 21 points and a game-high total of 15 rebounds. Jamie Cousart (Holland, PA/Holy Ghost Prep.) led King’s in scoring with 18 points.

In the second game, Richard Stockton stormed out to a 9-2 lead in the opening three minutes only to see Etown go had 11-9 three minutes later. By halftime, the host Blue Jays clung to a 30-29 lead. Etown received its biggest lead in the game with 8:41 left in the second half when Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) hit a jump shot to give the Blue Jays a 57-50 edge. From there, Richard Stockton began chipping away at Etown’s lead. The game was tied 69-69 with 20 seconds to go, and a Kris Polk (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) jumper for the visiting Ospreys with 17 seconds left turned out to be the game-winner as it gave Richard Stockton a 71-69 lead.

Four Blue Jays scored in double figures, including Adams with 16 points, Brad Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) with 13 points and a team-high total of six rebounds, Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) with 12 points, and Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) with 10 points from off the bench.

Polk led Stockton in scoring with 21 points from off the bench, and Tobias Smith (Newark, NJ/ Bloomfield Tech) and Kevin Holmes (Atlantic City, NJ/ Atlantic City) each scored 11 points. Jon Greene (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) added 10 points, and Miguel Rodriguez (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) was the Osprey’s top rebounder with 10 boards.

Stockton held a 40-38 edge in rebounding, and the Ospreys had 20 turnovers against 22 for Etown. Etown shot just nine-for-22 (40.9%) from the free throw line, while Richard Stockton hit four out of eight free throw attempts.
