The Knights led by nine twice in the second half, the first was 44-35 on a three-point bucket by Brett Schroeder with 16:53 left in the second half and the second time was with 15:47, Ty Proctor's jumper gave Southern Virginia a 46-37 lead. CNU would go on a 9-0 run to tie the score at 46-46. The Knights went over four minutes without a point.
So. Virginia retook the lead and jumped out to an eight point lead, 61-53, but CNU continued to chip away and eventually tied the score at 64-64 on an Edward Riley lay-up with 3:51 remaining.
Tanner Johnson gave the Knights a 71-68 lead on two free throws with one minute remaining in the game. Riley scored on the Captains next possession, collecting a loose ball in the paint for the lay-up and cutting the lead to one, 71-70. On Southern Virginia's next possession, Aaron Louder turned it over and the Captains Davon Barton was fouled with nine seconds left. Barton missed the first but made the second to tie the score. Louder's desperation three-pointer with one second left was no good.
In overtime, CNU kept its momentum right away as Riley tipped the ball into Southern Virginia's half of the court and Matt Coleman raced it down for an easy two points. From there, the Captains would would hold on for the victory.
The Knights led at the break, 36-32 on 14-of-33 (42%) shooting from the field, 4-12 (33%) on three's and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. CNU, however, shot just 13-of-34 (38%) from the floor but just 1-of-8 (13%) on three's and 5-of-8 (63%) from the free throw line.
For the game, So. Virgina was 27-of-65 (42%) from the field, 7-of-25 (28%) on three's and 15-of-24 (63%) from charity stripe. The Captains finished 32-of-81 (40%) from the floor, 2-of-17 (12%) on three's and 18-of-26 (69%) from the free throw line.
Tanner Johnson led the Knights with 19 points and eight rebounds. Louder added 15 points and eight boards and Schroeder contributed 14 points.
Barton, a freshman from Hampton, VA, led the Captains with 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to go along with five steals. Dont'a Selden finished with 19 points and seven rebounds while Edward Riley contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.
Southern Virginia falls to 2-4 while the Captains are now 1-0. CNU returns to action Tuesday as they host cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with tip set for 7:30 pm.
