Capital 92, Thiel 79

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Thiel College men's basketball team lost in the second game of Friday's Capital Classic, falling to host Capital University 92-79 at The Capital Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Sophomore guard Ross Watson and senior forward Damien Williams paced the Tomcats with 14 points apiece. Freshman guard Pete Farley totatled 11 points and five assists while sophomore forward Joe Herrmann added 10.

A Williams jumper gave Thiel (0-1) a 16-14 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening half, but Capital (1-0) went on a 22-10 run over the next 6:51 to go up 10 (36-26). The Crusaders went into the half with a 43-37 lead.

A three by sophomore guard Gary Gates trimmed the lead to three (43-30) 42 seconds into the second half, but Capital pulled away and went up by 11 (65-54) with just over 10 minutes to play.

Senior guard Stephen Laird cut the Tomcat deficit to 10 (89-79) with his three with 1:25 to go, but Capital was able close out the win down the stretch.

Nate Stahl and Steve Kyser each had 23 points to lead the Crusaders.

Thiel will meet Kenyon College (0-1) in the consolation game of the Capital Classic at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
