Michigan-Dearborn 88, Albion 77

ALBION, Mich. — If the Albion College men’s basketball team is to have a successful 2005-2006 season it is going to need a perimeter game to support senior center Brandon Crawford. Crawford scored a career-high 38 points and matched the fourth-highest single game total in school history, but the Britons connected on 4-of-16 shots from three-point range in an 88-77 loss to the University of Michigan-Dearborn on the opening night of the College Basketball Classic presented by the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce.

Albion will square off against DePauw University of Greencastle, Ind., in Saturday’s 2 p.m. consolation game. Ohio Northern University, a 74-66 victor over DePauw, will meet Michigan-Dearborn in the championship game set for 4 p.m.

Crawford scored Albion’s first two baskets to give the Britons early 2-0 and 4-3 leads.

The Wolves went on a 12-4 run to claim a lead it would not relinquish. Dearborn’s rally was sparked by three-point baskets by Andrew Kwietniewski and Justin Miller.

Albion hung around for most of the first half, trailing 32-30 when junior center Evan Way scored a basket with three minutes remaining.

Dearborn put the game away when it ended the first half with a 10-2 run to take a 42-32 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Crawford connected on 17-of-20 shots from the field. He also collected 13 rebounds. Way finished with 12 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field.

Miller led Dearborn with 25 points. Syneca Puryear contributed 18 points and nine rebounds. Kwietniewski and L.T. Willis added 17 and 14 points, respectively.
