Springfield 71, Norwich 56

3/3/05 — SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March. 3, 2005 – Springfield College junior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) totaled 22 points and five steals to lead the Pride past Norwich University, 71-56, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament this evening in Blake Arena. SC (22-6) advanced to the second round, where it will take on host Amherst College on Saturday (March 5) at 7:00 p.m.

Sophomore point guard Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was credited with 13 points, six assists and six rebounds, while junior forward Mike DeCesar (Acton, Mass) contributed 16 points and six rebounds for SC, which has won nine of its last 10 games.

Senior forward Tim Shedd (Hardwick, Vt.) scored 20 points, including four three pointers for Norwich, which ends the season 21-7. Senior center Adrian Ackles (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 12 points to go along with seven rebounds for the Cadets.

SC jumped out to a 15 point lead, 21-6, with 10:53 remaining in the first half before Norwich answered with a 17-7 run of its own over the next 6:25 to pull within three, 28-25 with 4:28 on the clock. An 11-4 SC run, including seven points from Yvon gave SC a 10 point lead, 39-29, after 20 minutes of play.

In the second half, SC built its largest lead of the game at 25 points, 62-37, on a lay-up by sophomore forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) with 9:26 remaining.

Norwich mounted a comeback with a 12-2 run over the next 4:29 to close within 15 points, 64-49 with 4:57 left on the clock. The Cadets would never get closer as the Pride won its first NCAA-Tournament appearance in five years.
