NORTHFIELD, Mn — Mac buzzer beater forces overtime, Oles lose

Ben Hande
January 31, 2005

Brad Lidell (So., Crystal Lake, Ill./ Central) of Macalester hit a three-pointer as time expired in regulation that tied the game and sent it to overtime, setting up the Ole loss in Skoglund Center Monday night.

St. Olaf took the lead early in overtime off a basket by Wade Pierce (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./ Osseo ). Macalester's Erik Jackson (Sr., Evergreen, Colo.) hit a three-pointer halfway through the extra period that put the Scots up by three and knocked down two free-throws with eight seconds left, again spreading the margin to three. With time running out, St. Olaf's Steve Banick (FY, Oakdale, Minn./ North St. Paul) flew down the court and got a good look to tie the game but the shot rimmed out.

The Oles were led in the first half by Pat Fraser (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./ Jefferson) who dropped seven points in nine minutes helping St. Olaf to a 35-33 halftime lead.

Jackson found his shot in the second half draining three three-pointers and keeping the Scots in the game with 13 points; he finished with 17. Tom Conboy (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./ Minnetonka) added 13 points and ten rebounds for Macalester.

Fraser finished the game with 15 points, but left during the overtime period with an elbow injury. Jon Bain (So., Austin, Minn.) played strong down low posting another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The loss moves the Oles to 3-11 in the MIAC. Their next game is Feb. 2 against Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.
