Guilford 91, Randolph-Macon 89

ASHLAND, Va. — A length-of-the-floor buzzer-beater for three points as time ran out in overtime by Guilford College sophomore guard Jordan Snipes (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) gave his team a 91-89 victory over Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s basketball action on Monday, January 31. With :00.6 remaining, a Randolph-Macon player made one foul shot and missed another. Snipes caught the rebound, and made a baseball throw down the court and into the basket. Snipes led all scorers with 34 points on 9-of-12 (75.0%) shooting, which included 6-of-7 (85.7%) three-pointers. He was also a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line.

With the win, which snaps a three-game losing slide, the Quakers improve to 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets drop to 12-8 on the season and 10-4 in the conference, ending a four-game winning streak.

The first 13 minutes of the contest featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Guilford began to take control, and the Quakers led by 12 points at halftime, 48-35. The lead was still 12 points, 51-39, early in the second period. But Randolph-Macon put together a 31-18 run to go ahead 70-69 with 6:00 left in regulation. It was the first lead for the Yellow Jackets since the 7:03 mark of the first half.

After two ties, Randolph-Macon would lead for about three minutes. A three-pointer by Guilford freshman guard Caleb Kimbrough (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill) gave the Quakers a 83-81 lead with 1:12 remaining. Then, Randolph-Macon sophomore guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) nailed two foul shots with :05 on the clock to knot the score again, at 83-83, and send the game into overtime.

The lead changed twice in the first three minutes of the extra period. With the Yellow Jackets up 88-86, Guilford freshman forward Kerry Atkinson (Raleigh, NC/Wakefield) scored to tie things up once more, at 88-88. With 00.6 left, Krovic was fouled, and made his first free throw. A miss on the second shot set up the heroics by Snipes.

Following the performance by Snipes, Guilford junior forward Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy) totaled 16 points on 6-of-10 (60.0%) shooting. He was also 4-for-6 (66.7%) at the foul line. Atkinson finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds – all defensive. Freshman center Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) and Kimbrough each scored nine points. Strong also had five rebounds and a team-high three blocked shots, while Kimbrough led Guilford in assists, with four.

For Randolph-Macon, junior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) scored a team-high 20 points on 8-of-13 (61.5%) shooting, including 3-for-3 three-point field goals. He also had nine rebounds, a career and game-high five assists, and a team-high three blocked shots. All of Wansley’s points and eight of his rebounds were in the second half, as he only played six minutes in the first because of foul trouble.

Also for the host Yellow Jackets, senior guard Justin Moyer (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) and sophomore forward Philip Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy) each scored 14 points. Moyer, who made 8-of-9 (88.9%) free throws, also had four assists. Hawley shot 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the floor. Freshman forward Jeremy Dixon (Manheim, PA/Hempfield) totaled career-highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. He made 5-of-7 (71.4%) field goals, and had seven of his rebounds at the defensive end of the court. Krovic finished with 11 points and four assists. Freshman center Andrew Baker (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) pulled down a career and game-high 12 rebounds – nine of those defensive.
