Carleton 78, Augsburg 65

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Kyle Beste (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored 30 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, leading Carleton College to its fourth straight victory with a 78-65 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Monday night at Si Melby Hall.

Dan Forkrud (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) had a double-double with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four steals for the Knights, now 12-7 overall and 10-4 in MIAC play.

Lucas Olson-Patterson (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) scored his third straight double-double and seventh of the season with 25 points and 13 assists for the Auggies, who dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 7-12 overall, 5-9 in MIAC play. Augsburg lost eight of its 10 games in January.

Trailing 9-5 early, Augsburg used an 11-0 run to take a 16-9 advantage with 13:28 left. But Carleton scored the next 15 straight points -- seven straight from Forkrud -- in a five-minute span to take a 24-16 advantage with 8:15 left. Leading 40-26 at halftime, the Knights pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 25 points.

Beste and Forkrud combined for 50 of the Knights' 78 points, with Anthony Baquero (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) and Jake Phillips (So., Brainerd, Minn.) adding eight points apiece. Phillips also had seven assists and five rebounds, and Baquero had three assists.

In addition to Olson-Patterson's double-double, Augsburg point guard Kevin Keto (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) scored a career-high 12 opints, with four assists and three steals. No other Augsburg player had more than six points. Dan Graf (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had four steals and seven rebounds.

Carleton hit 43.9 percent (25-of-57) of its field goals, including seven 3-pointers, while Augsburg hit 34.8 percent (23-of-66) from the field with six 3-pointers. Carleton outrebounded Augsburg by a 46-35 margin and also held a big advantage at the free-throw line, hitting 21-of-28 compared to 13-of-15 for Augsburg.

Both teams are in action on Wednesday (2/2) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Thomas and Carleton hosting Gustavus.
