Centre 73, DePauw 68

DANVILLE, KY — Centre men edge DePauw 73-68

Freshman guards Matt Nestheide and Thomas Britt combined to make six of six free throws in the last 20 seconds of the game to help the Centre College men's basketball team defeat DePauw University 73-68, Sunday, Jan. 30, in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels improve to 13-6 overall on the season and 5-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, while DePauw falls to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in conference action.

Sophomore forward Matt Jacobson led the Colonels offensive attack with 13 points. Nestheide and junior center Reggie Magnusson added 12 points each in the win. Junior forward Coy Zerhusen had a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Tigers' Steve Schott scored a game-high 21 points in the loss. Schott also pulled down eight rebounds. Todd Capes and Alex Stewart eached added 13 points for DePauw.

With the scored tied at four apiece early in the contest, six different Colonels scored in a 15-2 run, which would give them a 19-6 lead with 11:08 remaining in the half.

The Tigers answered with a run of their own, scoring 11 unanswered points, seven from Alex Stewart, to pull within two (19-17). Centre shot only 30.3% (10-33) from the field in the first half but would take a 29-26 lead into the intermission.

Magnusson scored six of Centre's first eight points in the second half to push the lead to 37-29, but DePauw would chip away and eventually take the lead 53-52 at the 7:34 mark in the second half.

The Tigers would lead for the next three minutes until a three-pointer by Nestheide and two free throws from Zerhusen put the Colonels ahead 62-60 with just over four mintues to play.

DePauw would pull within one (64-63) but a Britt three-pointer pushed the Colonel lead back to four. Nestheide made four-of-four from the free throw line and Britt was two-of-two in the final twenty seconds to seal the win.

Centre shot 52.4% (11-21) in the second half to finish the game at 38.9% (21-54) from the field. DePauw made 26 of 63 shots to shoot 41.3% for the game.

The Colonels will next play, Friday, Feb. 4, when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play Rhodes College. The SCAC tilt will begin at 8 p.m. CST.
