The first half was controlled by the Cougars, with Averett (6-10, 3-5 USA South) leading by as many as 10 points at one time in the half. Chowan (13-6) never gave up, however, and fought back to within three. Averett took a five-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half had a much quicker pace than the first, and both teams came out shooting. The Braves came back from their deficit and took the lead once, and tied the game several times, including the last time with 1:52 left. After that, it was all Averett defense and Chowan fouls.
Leading the way for the Cougars was CeCe Carter, with 14 points and five rebounds. Jetarwa Miles had the double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and also made three steals. Hanna Taylor rounded out the night with 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Leading the way for the Braves was Kara Jackson with 17 points and five rebounds.
The Cougars see more action on Tuesday versus Peace College at 7 P.M. in Raleigh, NC.
