Trinity (15-4, 7-1) led 42-33 at the break, but the Pirates were able to come back at the end of the game with a chance to force overtime.
In the final seconds, Trinity's Andy Bates blocked three-point shots on consecutive Southwestern possessions to preserve the win. His first block came on a shot from Aaron Bowser, whose fake put Bates out of position. Bowser had to step back behind the three-point line, and Bates blocked his shot from behind. Bates then blocked Jamonn Little on a desperation three from the wing right at the buzzer.
Trinity led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but Southwestern used a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to six (59-53). The Tigers scored just five points over the final 8:49 of the game, hitting just 2-9 from the field.
With 1:49 left, Trinity's Jason Morris hit a layup to push the lead to nine points, which seemed to put the game out of reach; however, the Pirates hit two straight three-pointers to cut the lead to three points with 18 seconds left. The Tigers then missed the front end of a 1-and-1 (one of three such misses in the final minute), and set up the two blocks by Bates.
Peter Murray led Trinity with 20 points on 8-12 shooting, tying his career high. Murray had 17 of the 20 in the first half of play. Murray also had six rebounds, three assists, and a team-best five blocks.
Bates scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting, while Sean Devins added nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds, as well as four blocks. Morris and Chad Stroberg chipped in with eight points each.
Bowser led Southwestern with 20 points, while Dan Slezak added 12 points. Little finished with 10 points, while Robert Cates had 11 boards.
Trinity has now won 12 straight games, which is three away from the school record set in 1960-61. The Tigers will be back on the road to face Millsaps and Oglethorpe next weekend.
