Mary Washington 72, St. Mary's (Md.) 57

St. Mary's City, MD — The St. Mary's College men's basketball team saw their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 72-57 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) loss to The University of Mary Washington. With their fourth consecutive win, the Eagles improve to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while the Seahawks drop to 8-10 overall and 4-4 in the conference with the loss.

The Eagles built a 20-point halftime lead with the 1-2 punch of freshman forward Jon Pierce and sophomore guard Mike Lee. Pierce scored 16 first half points while Lee added 15 as the Eagles jumped out to a 43-23 halftime advantage. Both players were 4-6 from behind the arc in the first half, as the Eagles connected on 9-15 three-point attempts in the half.

The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half and led by as much as 23 points. The Seahawks made an attempt to come back late in the contest and cut the deficit to 12 points after a three-pointer from freshman guard Ryan Junghans, but they would not be able to get any closer. The Eagles attempted 14 free throws, converting on six, in the final two minutes of play as the Seahawks resorted to fouling to try and stay in the contest.

Lee, who entered the contest leading the conference with an average of 22.3 points per game, led all scorers with 26 points. He also added three assists and two steals in the contest. Pierce tallied 23 points with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard A.J. Fitzgerald added seven points, while freshman guard Justin Baker added five points and seven rebounds.

For the Seahawks, senior forward Jeffrey Turner scored 16 points with a game-high tying nine rebounds. Freshman center Jerome Habel added 11 points and seven rebounds with three blocked shots. Junior guard Ben Stewart contributed with ten points, and senior forward John Dewey tallied seven points with a game-high tying nine rebounds.

The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, February 2, when they travel to Marymount University for an important conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. following the women's contest.
