Salve Regina 72, Anna Maria 38

NEWPORT, R.I. — Salve Regina University men's basketball held an opponent to the second-lowest total points in the history of the program as the Seahawks defeated visiting Anna Maria College, 72-38, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

The Seahawks 34-point margin of victory was their greatest since a 90-51 win over Nichols on February 16, 2000. Salve Regina defeated Gordon, 56-31, on February 4, 1993, making that date and today the only two times the Seahawks have held an opponent under 40 points (554 games).

Anna Maria led, 4-2, following a Quincy Nunnally [SO/Westboro, Mass.] layup, but it was all Seahawks after that. Chris Collier [SR/Exeter, N.H.] keyed a 14-0 run with six points including two layups over a five-minute span. Salve Regina would score 36 of its 39 first-half points in the paint.

The AmCats 11 first-half points were the fewest ever scored in a half by a Seahawk opponent. Salve Regina kept the foot on the gas pedal in the second half, opening up a 40-point lead (64-24) after a pair of free throws by Andrew Rego [FR/Little Compton, R.I.] at the 6:40 mark.

Collier led all scorers with 16 points and shared game-high rebound honors (9) with teammate Jon Hazzard [SO/North Kingstown, R.I.]. Matt Grendal [SO/Foxboro, Mass.] joined Collier in double-figure scoring with 13 points. Collier and Grendal had three blocked shots apiece as the Seahawks matched a program record with 11 swats in the game (also had 11 blocks against Eastern Nazarene, 2/5/2004).

Salve Regina (11-7; 8-2 CCC) plays at Curry College on Tuesday, February 1, 2005. Anna Maria (2-15; 0-10 CCC) hosts New England College on Tuesday, hoping to end a 10-game losing skid.
