York (Pa.) 75, Salisbury 67

SALISBURY, Md. — The York College men’s basketball squad earned another clutch road victory on Saturday as they traveled to Salisbury University and came home with a 75-67 Capital Athletic Conference win. The Spartans, winners of two straight and 11 of their last 12, improve to 16-2 overall and 6-2 in the CAC. Salisbury falls to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in the league.
The Spartans lead for all but three minutes in the first half as they seemed to control the action. York’s largest advantage came on a Chad McGowan trey that gave the green and white a 21-15 lead. That three came in the middle of a mini-McGowan run as the freshman scored seven straight Spartan points over a two and a half minute period midway through the first half. The Spartans took a 30-25 lead on a Josh Wurtz jumper with 3:19 left in the half. Unfortunately for York, the Spartans would go scoreless the remainder of the half as Salisbury scored the last six points of the stanza to take a 31-30 lead at the intermission.
The two teams kept it close as neither team was able to pull away. That changed after a Ray Williams jumper made it 44-42 York with 12:49 left. The Spartans then hit the hosts with a 12-4 run to take a 56-46 lead with 8:05 left in regulation. The Spartans eventually pushed the lead to as many as 11 twice with the second high water mark coming on a Brandon Bushey lay up with 2:42 remaining. The Gulls quickly cut the Spartan lead to four thanks to a quick 7-0 spurt as York led 67-63 with 1:21 showing on the clock. A pair of Ben Seibert free throws pushed the advantage back to six before a Segun Odumeru hit a jumper to trim the lead back to four with 49 seconds left. Junior Paddy Lee hit a jumper in the lane with 14 seconds left after a Spartan time out to give the Spartans a 71-65 lead. Bushey converted four free throws over the final nine seconds to salt away the win for the Spartans.
Bushey paced the Spartans with a game-high 21 points as he converted 7-of-12 from the field including 3-of-8 from distance. He also was 4-for-5 from the free throw line while he pulled down three rebounds and dished out three assists. McGowan added 16 points to the Spartan effort including a stellar 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line. Seibert and junior Brian Singer each contributed 10 points to the Spartans. Seibert pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Singer had four caroms of his own.
Ray Williams led the Gulls with 17 points in just 18 minutes of play. Kyle Harmon was the other Sea Gull in double figures with 16 points while he also had four rebounds. Matt Fohner added nine points and a team-high six boards for Salisbury.
The Spartans handled the Gulls on the boards as they held a 42-33 edge in caroms. The Spartans finished the game shooting 47.3% from the field but just 27.8% from beyond the arc. York did converted 81.8% of their attempts from the charity stripe as opposed to just 57.1% for Salisbury.
York returns to action on Wednesday when they host Goucher College in an 8:00 pm CAC contest. The game kicks off a two-game homestand as the Spartans look to avenge one of their two losses this season.
