Mount Union 63, Wilmington 59

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Wilmington College Quakers dropped their fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon with a 63-59 loss at the hands of Mount Union College.

Three Quakers scored in double figures, but it was not enough as the team lost for the fifth time in two weeks.

The Quakers scored first in the game when Deon Short hit a three-point basket before the Purple Raiders score the next 12 points and didn't trail for the remainder of the half. The Quakers closed to within six points at 22-16 with 6:29 to play in the game before the hosts used a 9-0 run to take a 15 point lead that the Quakers cut to seven by halftime.

The Quakers scored the first six points of the second half to close to within one, and eventually took a lead as large as three points before the Purple Raiders used a 7-0 run to give the hosts a four-point lead that they would keep for the remainder of the game. In the last five minutes Mount Union led by as many as seven points with 3:27 to play in the game before the Green and White fought back and tied the game at 59 with 11 seconds to play. Point guard Clay Sanders hit a layup with four seconds to play, before a Quaker turnover sealed the fate for the Quakers.

Short scored a team-high 13 points in the loss while freshmen Zach Broermann and Fred Harrison scored 10 points. David Guy pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while he and Broermann dished out four assists apiece.

Mount Union was led by Chris Blakely who scored 13 points while Brett Hershberger and Kyle Karpinski each scored a dozen. Blakely pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds while Sanders dished out six assists.

With the loss the Quakers fall to 8-11 on the season and 4-8 in the OAC while Mount Union improves to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in league play.

The next game for the Quakers is on Wednesday, February 2 when the team plays host to the Crusaders of Capital University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
