Six players for Ursinus scored in double-figures to propel the visiting Bears to the 89-81 victory in men’s basketball action Saturday. Ursinus freshman Nick Shattuck nailed nine of ten shots from the field to lead all scorers with 22 points in the winning effort. McDaniel countered with five players in double figures but could not rebound from a ten-point halftime deficit.
A Sam Anstead (pictured above) free throw with 3:15 remaining in the first half gave McDaniel a 27-26 advantage, which would be the last time McDaniel led on the scoreboard. Ursinus went on a 13-3 run to conclude the first 20 minutes and was never headed.
The Bears took a 21 point lead through the first 8:12 of the second half before McDaniel began to chip away. The Green Terror managed an 11-0 run over the next 3:30 to cut the Ursinus lead to 10. Exchanging baskets and foul shots over the next five minutes, the Green Terror finally forged a two-possession game with freshman Josh McKay’s two free-throws with 2:16 to play made the lead 79-73.
Several late baskets by both squads rounded out the scoring. McDaniel’s Sean McNeely came off the bench to score 15 points while Kyle O’Connor matched McNeely with 15 points. McKay finished the afternoon with 13 points, nine of which came from the charity stripe. Jemar Daniel corralled five offensive rebounds for a total of eight to accompany his 14 points in the defeat.
Ursinus' Mike McGarvey recorded his 198th career steal at the 7:51 mark of the first half, which set a new all-time Centennial mark. He finished the game with 13 points, six assists, and four steals.
McDaniel is back in action Wednesday evening when they host visiting Dickinson. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
