Maryville jumped out to an early lead, and led by as many as five points in the first seven minutes of the game. Webster would take over, however, after a 15-3 run to lead by seven points with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Gorlocks would increase their lead to 10 points, but the Saints cut the lead back down to trail by just six points heading into halftime.
Webster maintained their lead in the second half as Maryville's effort fell short in the end. The Saints were down 75-71 with only 43 seconds on the clock, but after two missed layups on the offensive end Maryville was forced to foul with 16 seconds remaining. The Gorlocks' Kaniela Aiona sank both free throws to put his team back up by six points.
The Saints now had 16 seconds to overcome a six point deficit. Junior Matt Regan missed a three-point attempt, but fellow junior Tim Elwell grabbed the offensive board and found senior Andrew Hulbert for the layup that cut the margin to four points. After a quick timeout, a foul and two missed charity shots by Webster's Steve Waterkotte, the Saints tried for a three-pointer, but the buzzer sounded marking the Saints first home loss this season.
Leading Maryville's offensive effort was Regan, who shot 8-of-15 (.533) from the floor, 1-of-2 (.500) from behind the arc and 6-of-8 (.750) from the charity stripe to finish with a season-high 23 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to record his third consecutive double-double, and added four assists and four steals.
Junior Ben Hebl also scored in double figures with 14 points, while tallying four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Hulbert and junior Ryan Klein each recorded eight points and seven rebounds for the game.
Webster's Darrin Hoggat sank 8-of-16 (.500) from the field and 11-of-15 (.733) from the free throw line to lead all scorers with a game-high 27 points. Waterkotte added 12 points and three assists, while Aiona finished with eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
The Saints will return to action next week when they travel to Greenville, IL, to battle it out with the Panthers of Greenville College in a 6:00 pm SLIAC contest.
