Ferrum, Va. – Senior Amber Triplett (Bassett, Va./Bassett) led all scorers with 28 points as the Ferrum College women's basketball team picked up a win over Chowan College at home, 85-72.
Triplett broke Mario Ferguson's record of most made 3-point field goals in a single game with eight, surpassing the former mark of seven. Triplett ended the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Panthers past the Braves in non-conference basketball action.
Senior Tara Toland (North, S.C./North) had 15 points and 13 assists. Sophomore Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) added 10 points, 16 rebounds and 6 steals in the win. Senior Angela VonWergers (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley College) also contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Panthers started off strong in the first half, as Triplett had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Aline Alzime grabbed 12 rebounds, eight on the offensive end. Ferrum took 42-31 lead into the locker room. After the break, the Panthers continued their strong play as Triplett matched here first half scoring effort and hit another four 3-pointers to break the nine year old record. Toland added six assists in the second half to finish one assist shy of the school (14).
Chowan had four players score in double figures for the men, winning 72-61. The Braves were led by Trayvon Lathan with 19 points. Wayne Hambrick had 18 points, Montino Williams had 17 and Cedric Armstrong had 14. The Braves led 37-32 at halftime, while the Panthers shot only 37% from the field for the contest. The two teams combined to commit 41 turnovers.
Sophomore Rob Fuller (Timberlake, N.C./Person Co.) led the Panthers with 16 points, while freshman Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) had 15 points and five steals. Chowan improves to 9-9 and Ferrum falls to 5-10 overall with the loss. Both men's and women's basketball teams play USA South conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan University tomorrow at 2 and 4 p.m.
