READING, Pa. — Junior guard Chris Talley scored a game-high 27 points and the Alvernia College defense held Cabrini College to just 10 points over a 15-minute stretch in the second half as the Crusaders defeated the Cavaliers, 78-58, Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference action at the Bollman Center.MACC Cabrini Cavaliers

Cabrini sophomore Jim McMahon opened the scoring with a baseline dunk and the visitors enjoyed a 6-point edge after a Ty Teasley jumper with 12:26 left in the first half. The Cavaliers held the lead until Josh Gerloff nailed a 3 from the right corner to spark a 7-0 run that put the Crusaders up 28-25. Alvernia held the lead the rest of the half and settled for a 2-point edge at the break, 33-31.
The Alvernia lead grew to six points to open the second half before Teasley knocked it down to one with five straight points, his final two making the score 37-36 with 18:04 to play. Talley then answered with five straight points and the Crusaders turned up the defense that led to a 27-9 run over the next 15 minutes. Alvernia forced seven of Cabrini’s 15 turnovers during that stretch.
The Cavaliers started sending Alvernia to the free throw line with just over three minutes left to play hoping to take advantage of a team that shoots 60 percent from the stripe. The strategy started to work as the Cavs cut seven points off the 19-point lead, but they could get no closer than 12, 70-58, with 2:03 left to play.
Alvernia will travel to Neumann College Monday night for an 8:00 game with the Knights.
