Puget Sound 74, Pacific Lutheran 56

TACOMA, Wash. — A 10-0 run by Puget Sound at the beginning of the second half and an eight-point burst by the Loggers later in the half proved too much for Pacific Lutheran to overcome as the Lutes fell to their cross-town rivals, 74-56, in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game tonight at UPS' Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Lutes, now 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference, were without starting guard Aundi Kustura, who is out with an injury. But PLU kept the Loggers in their sights throughout the opening half and trailed by five, 32-27, at the intermission.

Emily Voorhies grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to bring the Lutes to within three as the second half got underway. But Puget Sound answered with 10 straight points for a 42-29 advantage with 15:22 remaining.

The Lutes battled back and had the difference down to eight points on five different occasions, including 59-51 with 5:44 remaining. Puget Sound scored the next eight points to clinch the win.

Kelly Turner led the Lutes with 11 points. Patricia Buckingham tallied nine points, and Voorhies and Haley Martin both contributed 8 points. Voorhies also led PLU with 6 rebounds.

Angie Straw scored 22 points and pulled down 8 rebounds for the Loggers. Kilty Keaton scored 17 points and Lindsay May finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
