“We definitely needed this game to get back on track,” said head coach David Schultz. “Grinnell plays a different style of basketball so you have to adjust your game a little bit. Overall I thought we did a good job and accomplished what we wanted to.”
Carroll trailed 9-8 three-minutes into the game but went on a 12-0 run to lead 20-9 with 15:10 remaining in the first half. Carroll would not surrender the lead the remainder of the game. “Once we made that run we were able to play with the lead and limit their runs,” said Schultz. “That’s exactly what you have to do when you play Grinnell.”
Sophomore Buck Colomy led six double-digit scorers for Carroll with a game-high 27 points while fellow sophomore Nathan Drury added 24 points. Senior Ben Hickethier contributed 21 points to the win while sophomores Paul Toshner and Adam Ligocki chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Matt Brown led Grinnell with 17 points while Paul Nordland and Eric Walsh chipped in with 15 points each.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow after when they host Illinois College at 3 p.m. Carroll will be looking to avenge a 70-67 loss to IC last weekend in Jacksonville, Ill.
