The Cowboys went on a 29-8 run in the first half to go from trailing 7-2 to leading 31-15. The Cowboy defense limited the Bulldogs to eight points from the 16:58 mark until their were :37 remaining in the first half. Hsu led 31-17 at the break. In the run, freshman center Mardoche Jean had 12 points and Matt Brackett had five assists, four of them to Jean.
Texas Lutheran fought back in the second half. HSU led 40-23 when Tanner Kudrna hit a 3-pointer off an Adam Shoupe assist. After that the Cowboys went six minutes without scoring and Texas Lutheran countered with 14 straight points. Jason Grohman's turnaround jumper at the 9:31 mark cut the Cowboys lead to 40-37.
HSU responded right back with its knockout run, going on an 11-2 spurt over the next 3:26. James Peters had back-to-back buckets and Mardochee Jean hit three free throws. The Bulldogs never got closer than seven points the rest of the game.
Jean led the Cowboys with a career-best 17 points off the bench. He sparked the Cowboys filling in for Donald Rohde, who missed most of the game with an illness. Peters and Calvin Nite each had 10 points in the balanced attack. Matt Brackett had had five points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Tommy Stolhandske had 19 points to lead TLU.
The win moved the Cowboys into a second-place tie with Texas Lutheran. Both teams are 10-4 in the conference and the Cowboys are 12-5 on the year overall. TLU fell to 11-6. HSU hosts Schreiner on Saturday.
