York (Pa.) 78, Gallaudet 71

YORK, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team needed a solid effort to extend their home win streak to nine as the Spartans eased by Gallaudet University 78-71 in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night in York. The Spartans improve to 5-2 in the conference and 15-2 overall. The 15 wins in 17 games is the best 17-game start in school history. The Bison fall to 0-6 in the CAC and 4-11 overall.
The first half saw the Bison get on the board first but the Spartans scored the next seven points to lead 7-2 through the first three minutes of the game. The Spartans maintained the lead the remainder of the half as the advantage fluctuated between two and ten before the Spartans settled for the seven point halftime lead. York shot a blistering 55.2% from the floor and 66.7% from three in the first half but the Spartans also committed nine miscues which led to 10 Gallaudet points.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 10 in the early stages of the second half but the Bison kept plugging away and answering each of York’s charges. With York leading 56-47 with 14:11 left, the Bison went on a seven minute, 19-4 run that turned their nine point deficit into a five point lead. The Spartans tied the game at 65 thanks to a pair of Brandon Bushey free throws and three points from Brian Singer. The two teams traded free throws over the next 32 seconds before Frank Jackson gave the Bison a 69-67 lead with just 3:33 left. Bushey tied the game at 69 with a jumper and that bucket kick started a game-ending 11-2 run that gave the Spartans the victory. The Spartans converted all nine of their final free throw attempts of the game to secure the win.
The Spartans received a career-high 22 points from Singer as the junior forward added a game-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. Singer was 7-for-12 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. Bushey added 17 points and four rebounds as he was 5-for-7 from the floor including 3-of-5 from distance while he also converted all four of his free throw attempts. Junior Kenny Fass was the third Spartan in double figures with 11 points while he also had seven rebounds and five assists. Senior Josh Wurtz added a trio of big threes in the first half to finish with nine points and five rebounds for the game.
Jackson paced the Bison with a game-high 32 points on 11-of-23 shooting from the floor including 1-of-4 from beyond the arc. Jackson also made 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Robert Haney added 14 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and four assists. Brendan Stern contributed 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists while Bradley Miller was the fourth Bison in double figures with 10 points while he also pulled down seven boards.
The Spartans finished the game outrebounding the Bison 46-30 as the green and white rank seventh in the nation in rebounding margin. York also held Gallaudet to 39.7% shooting from the floor as YCP is ranked 20th in the country in field goal percentage defense. The Spartans converted 45.5% of their attempts from the floor and 45% of their three point field goal attempts.
York returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Salisbury University for another league contest. Game time in Salisbury, MD is set for 4:00 pm.
