Wilkes 87, Drew 51

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Wilkes University went on a 21-2 run in the first half and never looked back in notching an 87-51 Freedom Conference men’s basketball win over Drew University on Wednesday night in the Marts Center. The victory improves the Colonels to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Rangers see their records slip to 2-15 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Drew got off to a solid start and held an 11-9 lead following a field goal by Craig Clemente with 14:57 left in the initial stanza. The Colonels, however, answered with their decisive run to take control for good.

John Yanniello scored seven points to spark a 9-0 Wilkes spurt that enabled the Colonels to take an 18-11 advantage with 12:29 showing on the clock. Leon Thomas scored inside for Drew to cut the lead to 18-13, but Wilkes would rattle off the next 12 points.

Chris Shovlin nailed a jumper and then dished out a pass to Mike Constantine that resulted in a three-point play to push the Colonels lead to 23-13. On the next Wilkes possession John Sclafani hit David Goode with a pass that led to a thunderous Goode dunk to make it 25-13. Goode would score inside and Constantine would hit a three-pointer to extend the lead to 30-13 with 7:46 left in the half. The Colonels would eventually head into halftime with a 45-24 lead.

The Colonels would never let Drew get any closer than the halftime margin in the final twenty minutes. Wilkes, which shot an impressive 56.7 percent from the field in the first half, bettered that mark by connecting on 59.1 percent of their field goal attempts in the final period. The Colonels shot 57.7 percent for the contest.

Shovlin led Wilkes with 17 points, six steals and three assists. Yanniello and Goode both chipped in with 11 tallies. Evan Walters, who had four blocked shots, and Constantine both tied for team-high honors with four assists.

Thomas was the lone Drew player in twin digits with 14 points. He was also the leading rebounder for the Rangers with five.
