Christopher Newport 61, Averett 50

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team overcame a lackluster effort to come away with a 60-51 win over Averett Wednesday night.

The Captains lead at the break by just five, 27-22. CNU shot just 11-of-32 (34%) from the field, 2-of-9 (22%) on three's and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. The Cougars shot just 8-of-27 (30%) from the floor, 0-of-3 on three's and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

The second half was much of the same. Neither team approached the 40% shooting mark from the floor. AU was just 10-of-28 (36%) from the floor, 2-of-9 (22%) on three's and 7-of-11 (64%) from the free throw line. Averett managed 29 second half points to CNU's 33. The Captains finished the second half 11-of-29 (38%) from the floor, 2-of-8 (25%) on three's and 9-of-15 (60%) from the charity stripe.

For the game. AU shot 18-of-55 (33%) from the field, 2-of-12 (17%) on three's and 13-of-19 (68%) from the free throw line. The Captains finished the game 22-of-61 (36%) from the floor, 4-of-17 (24%) on three's and 12-of-20 (60%) from the free throw line.

The teams combined for 34 turnovers (18 committed by Averett). The Captains scored 22 points off those turnovers. CNU got 28 points off the bench compared to the Cougars 14.

AU was led by Andrew Boor with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sterling Williams finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Cameron Brown finished with 10 points off the bench.

The Captains were lead by Roderic Carey with 13 points and seven boards. Steven Murrer finished with nine points and eight rebounds and Amine Chebaane added a career high nine points.

The Cougars fall to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the USA South. CNU improves to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in the USA South.

The Captains return to action this Saturday as they travel to Methodist with tip set for 4 pm.
