Carthage 90, North Park 68

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (11-7, 5-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated CCIW-opponent North Park University (4-12, 0-5 CCIW), 90-68, on Wednesday, January 26 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Redmen took the lead for good in the game’s opening minutes and went up by as much as 15 points in the first half, 31-16, at 7:19. Carthage led by 11 points at halftime, 43-32. The Redmen used an 11-4 run at the start of the second period to take an 18-point lead, 54-36, at 16:59. The Vikings closed to within nine, 61-52, at 10:36 before Carthage used a 22-7 run to open up a 24-point bulge, 83-69, at 5:14, and the Redmen went on to win by 22 points, 90-68. Carthage shot 54 percent (32-59), including 64 percent (14-22) in the second half. North Park shot just 39 percent (24-61). Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Brian Schlemm scored a career-high 21 points on six-of-10 field goals, including three-of-six from three-point range, and six-of-six from the free-throw line. Kevin Menard had 17 points on six-of-seven from the floor and four-of-five free throws. Pat Kalamatas had 16 points and five rebounds, while Keena Johnson chipped in 10 points and four assists. Lamar Townsend topped the Vikings with 14 points. Carthage has an open date on Saturday, January 29 , and the Redmen return to action on Tuesday, February 1 (7:30 p.m.) against Wheaton College (Ill.) at King Arena in Wheaton, Ill.
