Drew 55, Wilkes 50

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Drew University notched a hard-fought 55-50 Freedom Conference women’s basketball win over Wilkes University on Tuesday night in the Marts Center. The win improves the Rangers to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Wilkes slips to 3-14 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Drew used a 10-2 run to open up their largest lead of the first half. With the game tied at 4-4, Melissa Coover knocked down a shot and Lauren Dubek followed with a bucket off an assist from Melissa Kraft to provide the Rangers with an 8-4 lead at the 11:02 mark. After Sarah Marquez scored on a drive for Drew, Andrea Kacprowicz fed Lacey Andresen for a Wilkes field goal to make it 10-6. Kraft would then connect on consecutive field goals to give Drew a 14-6 lead with 6:10 left in the stanza.

Trailing 16-8, Wilkes scored seven straight points to close within 16-15. Randi Corbo began the spurt with two free throws and Kacprowicz drilled a three-pointer to pull the Lady Colonels within 16-13. Andresen would cap the run with a layup off an assist from Rena Bolin at the 3:16 mark. Wilkes would eventually head into the halftime locker room trailing 21-20.

The Rangers would score the first nine points of the second half to assume a 30-20 lead less than four minutes into the period. Marquez scored four points during the run, while Dubek, Maggie Marquis and Coover had two points each. Drew would eventually increase their lead to 12 points, 38-26, on a basket by Jennifer Weldon with 14:14 left.

Wilkes would mount a charge to get back into the contest. Kacprowicz hit a three-pointer and Lyndsay Bey followed with a three of her own to cut the Drew lead to 38-32. Kacprowicz was then fouled attempting a three-pointer and hit all three charity tosses to pull Wilkes within 38-35. Bolin would cap the 11-0 spurt with a jumper to close the deficit to 38-37 with 11:31 remaining.

The Lady Colonels would forge in front, 44-42, on a Bolin field goal with 7:13 left. The game remained close with Bolin tying the contest on another bucket with 2:56 left that made it 48-48. However, Drew would score the next six points on field goals by Kraft, Weldon and Marquis to take a 54-48 lead with 44 seconds left. A free throw by Weldon with 31 ticks left upped the lead to 55-48, before Kacprowicz converted a shot with 13 seconds left to cap the scoring.

Kraft finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Drew attack. Weldon chipped in with 11 points and seven boards, while Dubek added a game-high 16 rebounds.

Bolin had a game-high 22 points, while also snaring five rebounds for the Lady Colonels. Kacprowicz connected for 16 points and also contributed seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman Karyn Perestam had two blocked shots for Wilkes as well and established a new Lady Colonels single-season record for blocks with 43.
