Wesleyan 65, Williams 64

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Junior Ashley Mastrangelo went 3-for-3 from the field and sank a pair of free throws to net all eight Wesleyan points in overtime to lead Wesleyan to victory. The win avenged an earlier loss at Williams 11 days ago. Mastrangelo also scored Wesleyan's final basket in regulation with :21 to go to tie the score at 57-57. Williams missed a final shot by sophomore Meghan O'Malley in regulation. Williams jumped ahead 62-59 in overtime as sophomore Meghan Stetson hit a jumper, O'Malley made one of two free throws and junior Colleen Hession hit a shot with 3:05 left for the three-point bulge. Mastrangelo countered with a basket at the 2:45 mark and two free throws at the :45.6 mark to give Wesleyan a 63-62 edge. Another Stetson bucket made it 64-63 for the visitors. But Mastrangelo took an inside pass from junior Meghan Robinson to the left of the hoop and rolled in the go-ahead bucket with :14 to go. Williams moved into the offensive zone and called timeout with :06.7 left. After inbounding the ball, Williams moved around the perimeter with senior Kerri McMahon and Hession handling the ball but neither managed a shot before time expired. Williams led early in the game jumping ahead 14-5 five minutes into the contest. Wesleyan whittled down the lead and took its first edge since senior Sue Frost opened the game with a three-pointer for Wesleyan on a basket by junior Hannah Stubbs with 3:08 remaining in the first half, 29-28. In total, Wesleyan scored the final 11 points of the period after trailing 28-24 to take a 35-28 lead into intermission. Wesleyan extended the margin to as many as 15 in the second half, leading 45-30 with 13:14 to play. But Williams, which forced 31 Wesleyan turnovers and had 18 steals, six of those by Hession, took the lead less than 10 minutes later, 52-51, on a three-pointer by sophomore Ellen Wilk, her only points of the contest. Hession and Stetson combined for 13 of Williams 20 points during a 20-4 run that turned a 47-32 deficit with 11:45 to go into the one-point lead. But the game entered the final two minutes tied at 55-55 and Hession found the mark with :38 to go for a 57-55 Williams lead before Mastrangelo tied it 17 seconds later.
