Vassar 70, Hartwick 51

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Vassar College men’s basketball team stormed out to a 19-5 lead in the first seven minutes and never looked back, cruising to a 70-51 non-conference victory over Hartwick on Tuesday night, reaching double digits in wins for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

The Brewers (10-5, 3-2 Liberty League) were led by ECAC Upstate and Liberty League guard-of-the-week Lawrence Avitabile (Southington, CT/Southington), who, in just 18 minutes of play, scored 18 points, 14 in the second half, on 9 of 12 shooting. Junior Will Byrne (Chelmsford, MA/Concord Academy) was 3 for 7 from downtown and registered 13 points. Senior Aldis Butler (Larkspur, CA/University) added 8 points and 8 rebounds (both career highs) and had one thundering block that drew the Brewer faithful to their feet.

Hartwick (2-12, 0-5 Empire 8) was led by John Montana with 8 points, and Eddie McAdoo and Sterling Green with 7. Tim Kindlon added 6 points and 6 rebounds.

It was a great opportunity for the Brewers’ bench to play, with all 15 players getting into the game. Vassar shot 45.6% from the field and committed just 10 turnovers on the game. Hartwick shot 44.7%, but committed 18 turnovers, and the Brewers out-rebounded the Hawks 33-28.

Vassar (currently third place in the Liberty League) will look to extend their season-high winning streak of four games this weekend, with crucial conference contests against co-leaders Hobart and Hamilton. Tip off on Friday is at 8pm and on Saturday is at 4pm.
