Moravian held a brief 2-0 lead at the 18:04 mark before Elizabethtown took an 8-4 lead. The Greyhounds would rally for an 11-8 lead at the 15:25 mark before the Blue Jays charged ahead for a 19-13 lead with 10:43 remaining in the first half. Moravian would come back to tie the game at 19-19 with 7:39 remaining in the first 20 minutes but Elizabethtown finished the half with a 21-8 run to take a 40-27 lead into halftime.
The Blue Jays made 15 of 31 field goal attempts (48.4 percent) in the first half including six of 17 three-pointers while shooting four of five at the foul line. The Greyhounds, who committed 12 turnovers in the first half, made just nine of 32 field goal attempts (32.1 percent) in the first 20 minutes including just two of 12 three-pointers while shooting seven of eight from the foul line.
Elizabethtown kept its double-digit lead off and on for the first seven minutes of the second half, leading by as many as 14 points, 56-42 with 13:53 left in regulation. Moravian would start its comeback at that point and slowly pulled even at 72-72 with 1:06 remaining in regulation on a three-pointer by junior forward Zach Zsilavecz. In the final 1:02 of the game, Moravian was one of two at the foul line while the Blue Jays connected on just one of four free throw attempts, setting the score at 73-73 and forcing the overtime session.
In the second half, the Greyhounds made 16 of 28 field goal attempts (57.1 percent) including four of ten on three-pointers while shooting ten of 14 at the foul line. Elizabethtown made just 11 of 27 field goals (40.7 percent) in the second half including two of seven three pointers and just nine of 17 free throws.
The charity stripe was the difference in overtime with Elizabethtown making three of four free throw attempts in the extra session while the Greyhounds were nine of 12. The Blue Jays ad the lead twice in overtime at 75-73 and 80-78 but Moravian took the lead for good on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Michael Clemente, who was making his first career start in the game, with 42 seconds remaining in overtime. Clemente would set the final score at 85-82 with a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining. Moravian, which committed just eight turnovers in the second half and overtime, had a 40-38 advantage on the boards in the game.
The overtime victory is the second of the season at home for Moravian in Commonwealth Conference action and pulled the Greyhounds even in conference play at 3-3.
Moravian had four players in double figures led by junior forward Steve Wenderfer, who scored a game and career high 22 points while pulling down a game high ten rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Zsilavecz added 20 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals while Clemente tossed in career high 11 points. Senior forward Brandon Zaleski had 15 points and six rebounds for Moravian to move over the 1,750-point plateau in his career.
Freshman guard Ryan Miller had nine points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds for the Greyhounds while junior forward Ed Reid contributed five points and five boards. Sophomore forward Matt Devlin added three points, four blocked shots and three rebounds in the victory.
For Elizabethtown, senior forward Kyle Conrad had 21 points for the Blue Jays, surpassing the 1,000-point plateau with 8:48 remaining in regulation on his fourth three-pointer of the game. Conrad also had four rebounds and three assists for Elizabethtown.
Senior forward Andrew Flynn contributed 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Blue Jays while junior forward Brian Schreiber had nine points and seven rebounds off the bench. Senior forward Dan Keane and senior guard Jon Connor each had eight points for Elizabethtown before fouling out of the game in overtime.
Moravian improves to 5-12 overall and 3-3 in Commonwealth Conference action while Elizabethtown slips to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday, January 29th when they host Susquehanna University at 4:00 p.m. while the Blue Jays will host Albright College at 4:00 p.m.
