Springfield 76, Coast Guard 61

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Joel Aponte scored 18 points including the first six of the second half and Springfield shot 58 percent from the floor beating Coast Guard 76-61 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes on a pair of three-pointers by Al Sowers, who led the Bears with 17 points.
Springfield responded with a 15-3 run to take a 15-9 lead with 13:05 left in the first half. The Pride led 35-36 at halftime.
Aponte scored the first six points of the second half as the Pride built a 41-36 lead with 18:15 to go and Springfield (13-4, 4-2) cruised from that point on.
The Pride shot 31 of 53 from the floor and eight for 20 from three-point range. Derek Yvon had 17 points for Springfield while Kyle Marian (14) and Mike DeCesar (12) were also in double figures. Anthony Pizzo had nine assists for Springfield.
Craig Johnson had 16 points for Coast Guard (8-8, 1-5) while Grant Johnson added 13.
