Brockport State 62, Cortland State 60

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Junior guard Ben Bellucci (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) scored on a twisting layup with 1.4 seconds remaining to lift SUNY Brockport to a 62-60 victory over SUNY Cortland at Tuttle North Gymnasium here tonight.

Cortland's Simon Skrelja tried to throw a three-quarter court pass but the ball pulled a teammate out of bounds and gave Brockport the ball with 0.4 seconds left. The Golden Eagles simply inbounded to win the game.

Brockport posted its fifth straight win and improved to 4-2 in the SUNYAC standings, 10-4 overall. Cortland is 4-3 in SUNYAC play, 9-7 overall.

Bryan Boswell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) led the Golden Eagles with a game high 21 points, including 10 of 11 from the foul line. David Andrews (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) had 10 points.

Skrelja scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Cortland. Rod Headley (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) had 14 points and Justin O'Garrow (Port Washington, NY/Schrieber) scored 12.

Boswell scored five points to key a 17-2 burst by Brockport early in the first half that gave the Golden Eagles a 21-11 lead with 10:35 left in the first half. Two free throws by O'Garrow ended a lengthy Cortland run and pulled the visitors within four, 24-20, with 5:12 left in the half. It was 36-28 Brockport at the half.

Five early points from Skrelja and back to back three-point goals by Dave Jutton (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) gave Cortland a 41-38 lead early in the second half.

Neither club could seize control. Brockport opened a six point edge, 49-43, with 9:37 to go, but six points from one player - a three-pointer and three free throws - by Brian Kirchoff (Webster, NY/Webster) put the Dragons up, 51-50 with 7:09 remaining.

Boswell sank two free throws to put the Golden Eagles up, 60-57 with 1:22 to go. Headley made one free throw with 1:02 left, then O'Garrow drove for a layup to tie the score at 60-all with 00:29 left.

After a timeout, the Eagles ran down the clock before getting the ball to Bellucci at the foul line. He swept into the lane, curled around a defender, and arched his layup high off the glass for the gamewinner. It was his only basket of the contest, but it came at the perfect time.
