The game was scheduled for the previous Saturday, but it was postponed due to
the snowstorm that swept through West Michigan over the weekend.
Heading into the game, Calvin and Hope sat a half-game behind Albion in the
league standings at 7-1. Hope's victory allowed the Flying Dutch to move
into a first place tie with Albion as it improved to 8-1 in the league and 15-2
overall. Calvin is a game behind at 7-2 in the league and 13-3 overall.
With its victory, Hope also snapped Calvin's 11-game win streak while
extending its own win streak to eight games. Hope has now won its last six
games against Calvin at the Calvin Fieldhouse dating back to the 2000-2001
season.
Calvin took a 5-2 lead and held it for the first three minutes of the game.
However, that was the last lead the Knights would hold With the teams tied at
13, Hope went on a 12-0 run. The Knights cut the lead to seven with a couple
jumpers by senior Lesa Holleman [Chandler, MN/SW Minnesota Christian] and
senior Lisa Nanninga [Grand Rapids/ GR Christian]. Hope led at halftime,
32-22.
Sophomore Lisa Winkle [Grand Rapids/South Christian] scored a quick four
points at the beginning of the second half, cutting Hope's lead to six. Hope
returned with a seven point run to regain a 13 point lead. Four minutes later,
the Flying Dutch had another 11 point run, including eight points from junior
Bria Ebels. Senior Brittney DeRoos [Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan County Christian]
scored three three-pointers in the last few minutes of the half, and freshman
Wendy Zigterman [Western Springs, IL/Timothy Christian] put up five points up
at the end of the game. Hope won the game, 67-50.
"We never got on track," said Calvin's head coach John Ross. "We never
really got anything going. Give Hope some of the credit for that. They played
extremely well, particularly on defense."
For the Knights, DeRoos led the team with 10 points and two steals. Lisa
Winkle grabbed a team high eight rebounds, a game high five blocks, and put up
seven points. Nanninga brought down seven rebounds and contributed six points.
Senior Kristen Mc Donald [Grand Rapids/West Catholic] dished out a team-high
five assists.
"We played very well tonight," said Hope's head coach Brian Morehouse.
"A lot of different people pitched in. There was a good balance across the
board."
For the Flying Dutch, Ebels led with a game-high 17 points. Sophomore Ellen
Wood put up fourteen points and blocked two shots. Senior Adelynn Vilmann
brought down a team high eight rebounds. Sophomore Julie Henderson and junior
Megan Noll both dished out six assists and freshman Jordyn Boles had five
assists and five steals.
We played very well, especially defensively," said Morehouse. "We're
winning because of our defense."
Both teams brought down 38 rebounds. Hope scored 42 points in the paint
compared to Calvin's 14.
Calvin also played without freshman Charis Larson who sat out the game with in
injury.
"The stats may not always show it but Charis Larson is a very important part
of our team. That's hard to replace. That was a big loss for us," said
Ross. "We definitely missed her enthusiasm and energy."
The Knights return to action Wednesday night to take on Alma at 8:00 p.m.
